You would expect, given the subject matter, that this would be a dynamic, heavy song and the band delivers. The peaceable kingdom that regular people want is represented by the gentle chorus while the the harsh and ugly reality is represented by the brutal verses. The metaphor of embers spreading a fire seems to to be appropriate for extremism. Neil uses metaphors of tarot cards rather than describing the incident directly, which I think was a good choice. A wave towards the clearing sky brings the images of that day to mind as the smoke cleared revealing bright open sky where massive towers once stood. Lyrically the song is clearly about extremism and the 9/11 attacks specifically. Later in the song a new, more energetic riff is introduced which almost sounds like a Rush nod to nu-metal (in a good way). Then the chorus changes dynamics totally with gentle guitar strumming and a light but intricate bass figure by Geddy. Geddy is dishing out bass chords in the verse and Alex is laying out some very harsh and crunchy guitar.

peaceable kingdom rush

This has to be one of the heaviest tracks Rush has ever done.

The whole album works for me really, and this is just another good track. I like the way the music flips between styles, almost like the constant wrestling between the conflict and the wish for resolution. The mellow section has a nice melody that slowly gives way to that layered thing as it draws to a close, giving an almost transitional feel from mellow to aggression. I must say on first listen it did step me back a bit. I think it has a sort of vocal effect on it also. I think it just a double vocal with an odd harmony, but it is very effective. It has a sort of anti-melody thing going on, while still hinting at a melody. I also actually like the unusual layered vocal. I like the dynamic we get with this song. Most of the lyric is poetic writing, that is as seems regualr for Neil around this era to be a little obtuse, but for the most part I like these lyrics. We leave at the end with the fact that the sparks from the fires, just light more fires. It is interesting that we seem to have some tarot card references. To some degree the opening lyrics suggest the truth that as much as we would like this peaceable kingdom, we can't expect those that prefer conflict will ever listen. Lyrically we have some interesting things going on.
